SFITAL Program at a Glance

The action-research activity Sustainable Farming in Tropical Asian Landscapes or SFITAL Indonesia is supported by the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), and we, World Agroforestry (ICRAF) as the leading implementer.

SFITAL will run for five years. They are starting from 2020 to 2025. The locations of SIFTAL activities are North Luwu Regency in South Sulawesi for cocoa and North Labuhanbatu in North Sumatera Province for palm oil commodities.

SFITAL activities are run by ICRAF, Rainforest Alliance and MARS Incorporated, together with the District Governments of North Luwu and North Labuhanbatu.

SFITAL aspires to encourage the emergence of advanced and independent farmers who can manage agricultural land by following sustainable principles, understand entrepreneurial principles to compete in the global market and have the skills to partner equally with the government and the private sector.

The SFITAL team also strives to encourage the creation of multi-sectoral partnerships to expand sustainable agricultural practices and ensure an immediate transformation of the world’s food system.

All activities and progress of the SFITAL program are thoroughly monitored by the government, development agencies, farmer associations, and the private sector.

SFITAL is expected to contribute to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, Goal 2: End hunger, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and Goal 15: Protect Terrestrial Ecosystems.

SFITAL will establish partnerships with all parties, including farmers, small entrepreneurs, district and provincial governments, actors, and the Government of Indonesia, to realise the development of sustainable commodity value chains in Indonesia.
