In Indonesia, SFITAL works in Sumatra and Sulawesi in districts with great potential to upgrade its smallholders to sustainable commodity value chains. Labuhanbatu Utara (North Sumatra Province), focusing on palm oil. North Luwu (South Sulawesi Province), focusing on cocoa.

North Sumatra Province is the third largest palm oil producer, and South Sulawesi Province was the second largest cocoa producer in 2018 (Pusdatin, 2019). Regarding Gross Domestic Product, North Sumatra is the fifth most significant contributor to Indonesia’s GDP, while South Sulawesi is ninth.


North Luwu

North Luwu Regency, established based on Law no. 19 the year 1999, is a fraction of Luwu Regency. The area of North Luwu Regency is 7,502.08 km² with a population of around 312,883 people, according to BPS data in 2020. Geographically, North Luwu Regency is bordered by Central Sulawesi (north), East Luwu Regency (east), Bone Bay (south), and Tana Toraja Regency (west).

 

North Luwu Regency is about 324 km from Makassar (The capital of South Sulawesi Province) and 107 km from Mamuju (The capital of West Sulawesi). The North Luwu landscape is famous for its undulating terrain, from the coast to mountainous areas, with elevations reaching a height of 3,016 meters above sea level high. North Luwu Regency is also known as one of the vital cocoa and rice producers in South Sulawesi and, more recently, palm oil. North Luwu Regency is administratively divided into 15 sub-districts, seven sub-districts, and 166 villages. Seko, Rampi and Masamba sub-districts are the three largest sub-districts in North Luwu Regency.
