North Luwu

 

North Luwu Regency is one of the regencies in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. North Luwu Regency covers an area of 7,502.58 km², with a population of 287,606 in the 2010 census. North Luwu Regency in 2010 consisted of 11 administrative sub-districts, with Masamba as the central city.

 

North Luwu Regency was established in 1999, located in the northern part of South Sulawesi Province, bordered by Central Sulawesi in the north, West Sulawesi Province and Toraja Regency in the west, Luwu Regency and Teluk Bone in the south, East Luwu Regency in the east. North Luwu Regency is 324 km from Makassar (The capital of South Sulawesi Province) and 107 km from Mamuju (The capital of West Sulawesi).

 

The North Luwu landscape is famous for its undulating terrain, from the coast to mountainous areas, with elevations reaching a height of 3,016 meters above sea level high. North Luwu is also known as one of the largest cocoa and rice producers in South Sulawesi, and recently oil palm is also gradually expanding to the district. North Luwu covers an area of 7,502 km² and is administratively divided into 15 sub-districts and 174 villages. Seko, Rampi and Masamba sub-districts are the three largest sub-districts in North Luwu, comprising 28%, 21%, and 14% of the regional district (BPS Luwu Utara, 2020).

 

In 2015, agricultural land use reached around 614,000 hectares. About 4.4% or 27,709 hectares of agricultural land are rice fields, and 95.6%

or 586,320 hectares is dryland agriculture. About 83% of the dry land rural area, about 488,098 hectares, is categorised as a community forest,
10% of plantation area, 5% of agricultural land (fields/moor) and 2% of uncultivated land. Approximately 70.2% of the total land use in Luwu
North in 2015 is categorised as a protected forest area (RPJM Luwu Utara 2016-2021).

 

Until 2017, the mangrove area in North Luwu was recorded at 2,752 hectares, with protected forest areas covering 332,427 hectares and urban forest covering 237 hectares (KPH Rongkong, 2017). Forest Management The Forest Management Unit in North Luwu is designed for protected forest (hutan lindung) under the Rongkong KPHL, with a total area of 419,155 hectares.
